Observaciones De OPETH

Según Blabbermouth.net, los cada días más populares Opeth van a ofrecer varios shows especiales durante su próxima gira norteamericana, bautizados "Chronology MCMXCIV- MMV - A Live Observation By Opeth", en los que tocarían temas de sus primeros trabajos, muchos de ellos nunca antes tocados en vivo. Dichos shows durarían más de dos horas, serían en lugares con asientos, y no contarían con ninguna banda soporte.

Los suecos/uruguayos ya habían hecho algo similar tras la salida de la dupla "Deliverance" / "Damnation" al dividir sus shows en dos secciones (una con el material relajado y semi-acústico, y la otra con los temas más pesados), y el resultado de aquel experimento fue el memorable DVD "Lamentations" (de compra obligatoria para cualquier amante del grupo, dicho sea de paso). Esperemos que estos nuevos shows se graben para un futuro disco en vivo, en lo posible doble.

Sweden's OPETH will hold several special performances, dubbed "Chronology MCMXCIV- MMV - A Live Observation By Opeth", in select U.S. markets on their upcoming tour encompassing material from each of their albums released throughout their career (1994-2005). These shows will be seated, with no support bands and will run for over two hours each with unique production. The markets in which these special nights will be held are New York, Chicago, and there is also a to-be-scheduled special performance in Los Angeles, CA.

OPETH will launch the much-anticipated second stage of their Ghost Reveries Tour in North America, beginning on February 15 in Raleigh, NC. In tow on this outing will be DARK TRANQUILITY supporting directly and THE DEVIN TOWNSEND BAND as openers in February and labelmates DEVILDRIVER as openers in March.

Sweden's OPETH have revealed more information about their upcoming special performances, dubbed "Chronology MCMXCIV- MMV - A Live Observation By Opeth", which will take place in select U.S. markets on their upcoming tour. The shows, which are scheduled for New York City's Town Hall (Feb. 23), Chicago's House of Blues (March 2) and Los Angeles' Wiltern Theatre (March 14), will consist of a chronologically played setlist, starting with music from the very first record, "Orchid", and ending with vibes from the latest opus, "Ghost Reveries". These extended sets are exclusive to the three dates and there won't be any support bands on these nights. OPETH and crew will also bring in extra production and screens in order to try and make this the ultimate OPETH live experience. The band promise a very varied setlist and songs that have never been played live before. The setlist will boast no less than four songs that haven't been performed on American soil and several others that haven't been played for years.

La Tragedia Del Pop

La ocupadísima Liv Kristine acaba de terminar un video-clip para el tema "Fake A Smile", primer corte de difusión de su nuevo disco solista, "Enter My Religion". Lo pueden bajar de acá, siempre y cuando tengan conexión de banda ancha (el clip pesa casi 30 megas).

El enfoque netamente pop y baladesco con el que la noruega pareciera haber encarado este segundo álbum solista queda en evidencia ni bien el clip da comienzo: rostro seductor aunque nostálgico, ritmo contenido, primeros planos de ensueño, y un estribillo tan pegadizo como naive, en el que la angelical rubia llora la pérdida amorosa de turno. Pero la cosa funciona. Tal vez justamente porque se estructura en base a clichés cuya eficacia quedó ya ultra-demostrada infinidad de veces.

Entonces ya se sabe: Para escuchar a la Liv Kristine épica, majestuosa y románticamente pesada, escuchen Leaves' Eyes, cuyos dos discos francamente no tienen desperdicio (o sáquenle el polvo a los primeros discos de Theatre Of Tragedy, que bien merecen ser puestos a girar al menos una vez al mes). Pero para escuchar a la Liv Kristine romántica a secas, susurrando melodías aptas para la radio a las 2 de la tarde y explotando su figura y cabellera blonda, tenemos cosas como "Enter My Religion" y esos primeros planos que te causan cosquillas en el estómago...

Mientras tanto, también hay novedades de la ex-banda de Kristine, según informa Blabbermouth.net:

Norway's THEATRE OF TRAGEDY will release their new single, "Storm", on February 24 via AFM Records/Soulfood. In addition to the title cut (check out audio sample at this location), the single will include a club remix of "Storm", another album track ("Begin and End"), and an exclusive song that will only be available on this single, entitled "Beauty in Deconstruction". A video for "Storm" will be shot in the near future.

"Storm" (the album) (view cover here) is scheduled for release in Germany and Switzerland on Friday, March 24 via AFM Records. The rest of Europe will follow on Monday, March 27. A U.S. release date will be announced later. The CD was produced by Rico Darum and mixed by Greg Reely (PARADISE LOST, FEAR FACTORY, FRONT LINE ASSEMBLY, SKINNY PUPPY, etc.) at The Green Jacket studios in Richmond, B.C., Canada. Other songtitles set to appear on the album include "Disintegration", "Fade" and "Dust".

THEATRE OF TRAGEDY's new album will be the group's first to feature singer Nell (THE CREST), who replaced Liv Kristine Espenaes Krull (currently in LEAVES' EYES) in early 2004.

As previously reported, Norway's GOTHMINISTER have been confirmed as the support act for THEATRE OF TRAGEDY on their upcoming European tour. GOTHMINISTER will appear on all shows except the Norwegian dates. A complete list of currently confirmed tour dates can be found at this location.

Tapa MAELSTROM #12

Acá la tienen, en toda su gloria. Un gusto (y gran orgullo) el poder poner a una banda como Opeth en la tapa (la primera en Argentina, si no me equivoco). El reportaje (hecho cara a cara con el grupo antes de un show en Estados Unidos) vale sinceramente la pena y revela que, más allá del impensado reconocimiento y la increíble difusión que el grupo está recibiendo a nivel mundial, lo de ellos es música por amor a la música, y nada más.

Calcúlenle unas semanas más antes de que la revista salga a la calle, no obstante. Aún nos falta algo del diseño, y después tenemos que entrar a imprenta.

Pero no podía aguantarme las ganas de compartir esta tapa con ustedes. El 2005 fue de Opeth, no caben dudas.

RHAPSODY Edita Su Primer Disco En Vivo

...y no falta mucho para poder comprarlo:

Italian film-score metal icons RHAPSODY have announced that they will release their first live album on January 31 via Magic Circle Music. Entitled "Live In Canada 2005 – The Dark Secret", the release is a testimony of pure energy, with over 60 minutes of footage recorded at the Metropolis in Montreal/Canada on June 14, 2005 during leg one of the MANOWAR's "Demons, Dragons and Warriors World Tour".

As the special guests for MANOWAR this past summer, RHAPSODY's performance was highly acclaimed internationally for its stripped down and performance-orientated arrangements, which allowed the band to prove that the music really is the message.

"This album is exceptionally magical,” said guitarist and composer Luca Turilli. "It combines the song visions with the fun we had on stage and the amazing reaction from the fans."

Keyboardist and composer Alex Staropoli added, "The reaction of the fans in Canada and the U.S. was just unbelievable. That's why we simply had to name this album 'Live In Canada'. A true dedication!"

"Live In Canada 2005 – The Dark Secret" will be released in two configurations: as a CD format that features the complete Montreal show and as a limited edition CD package (with the complete album recorded in 5.1 surround sound) that will include a bonus DVD that contains exclusive behind-the-scenes-material. The track list includes old favourites from previous years as well as tracks from their latest release "Symphony of Enchanted Lands II - The Dark Secret".

¿La Imagen Es Todo?

Christina Scabbia, vocalista de Lacuna Coil, fue votada "la mina más fuerte del metal" por la revista norteamericana Revolver.

Y nadie puede afirmar lo contrario... ¿no?

Lo sorprendente (o predecible, dependiendo de cómo se analice el asunto) es el grado de atención mediática que Lacuna Coil está recibiendo, especialmente en Estados Unidos. Pero no caben dudas: si Scabbia no fuera tan vendible visualmente, Lacuna Coil nunca hubiera llegado muy lejos. Y la imagen en USA lo es todo. Tarja Turunen es demasiado "fina" como para competir al mismo nivel, y de hecho nadie casi mencionó el reciente conflicto entre ella y Nightwish en la prensa especializada yankee. Anneke está a un nivel inferior, por su bienvenido "perfil bajo" y por un estilo vocal/musical mucho más maduro, interesante y experimental, desinteresado por el amarillismo o lo efímero. Scabbia, en cambio, hoy vende más que la cantante de Evanescence (¿cómo era su nombre? Ya nadie se acuerda, ¿no?). Increíble lo que un par de buenas piernas y una mirada como la que ven arriba pueden hacer para una banda de pseudo-doom/pop. Pero eso ya lo sabíamos. En una de esas vamos a ver a Scabbia adornando la portada de alguna revista mucho más grande en el futuro cercano. Rolling Stone, ¿tal vez?

La gente de Century Media debe, como suelen decir acá en USA, "estar riéndose camino a hacer un depósito en el banco".

MAELSTROM #12: Falta Poco

Estoy dándole los últimos toques al próximo número de la revista, corrigiendo notas (junto con el amigo Leandro Otero, nuestro flamante nuevo "secretario de redacción"), definiendo los contenidos y terminando de redactar los pocos textos que me quedaban pendientes. El 2005 fue de lo más movido, fuera y dentro de la revista, y francamente me alegro de que haya terminado. Huracanes, mudanzas (de domicilio y de país), cambios en el staff de la revista, falta de tiempo constante... Eso de "hacer borrón y cuenta nueva" siempre me pareció ridículo e iluso (de los errores se aprende, no hay que olvidar de dónde venimos, y lo que nos espera por lo general resulta ser mucho peor que lo que ya pasó), pero en este 2006 pretendo (¡espero!) volver a dedicarme lo más que pueda a la revista y, de una bendita vez, definir qué cuernos voy a hacer con mi vida personal (¿quedarme en USA? ¿volver a Canadá? ¿o a Argentina? ¿u otra cosa?). Me había hecho la misma propuesta el año pasado y la cosa no funcionó, así que mis expectativas esta vez no son altas (en realidad, nunca lo son... mi personalidad ultra-pesimista y misantrópica prohibe tal cosa), pero, en fin... Veremos qué deparan los próximos doce meses.

Por lo pronto, acabo de terminar la nota a Arcturus, aquella que tantos meses me costó conseguir (quedó jugosa y bastante completa... un sueño hecho realidad el hablar tanto con Sverd como con Skoll), y con el diseñador estamos finalizando la tapa para el #12. Tengo pensando subir un adelanto dentro de poco, así que péguenle un vistazo a estas páginas en unos días.
