STUDENT FILMMAKER CASTS DAVID HASSELHOFF AND EDGUY'S TOBIAS SAMMET IN MODERN VERSION OF BLAKE EDWARDS' 1965 CLASSIC, THE GREAT RACE

"All this time I thought America was the land of the miracle," muses EDGUY frontman Tobias Sammet from his home in Germany. "I'm glad this is a project where I won't have to actually fly to the Sahara Desert, do my own stunts with explosions, and take out a life insurance policy just to be involved!"

According to Sammet, the upcoming computer-animated project is fueled by a festering sibling rivalry between a 22-year old CGI student at The German Film School and his older brother. With the project, film student Thomas Runke hopes to settle a childhood score of which is the world's best car: a Ferrari(tm) or the Pontiac Trans Am(tm) known as K.I.T.T.©, made famous by David Hasselhoff and the mid-1980's television series Knight Rider.

According to the details provided by Runke to Sammet, it was a play session over 16 years ago that set the stage for this plot of digital revenge. Surrounded by friends and schoolmates, older brother Lucas challenged Runke to an impromptu race for "The Car Championship of the World," which involved both brothers carrying their toy cars (Runke carried the Ferrari(tm); Lucas carried K.I.T.T.©) over the rough terrain of their neighborhood playground toward a finish line that Lucas kept changing. Much like the Professor Fate character in The Great Race, the older brother was a skilled cheater and therefore won, but never acquiesed to a re-match.

It was Runke's best friend and avid EDGUY fan that recommended casting Tobias Sammet in the lead role after reading an online interview with the charismatic frontman where Sammet stated he wanted to sell enough of the band's latest release, Rocket Ride, to buy a Ferrari(tm). Released in North America on March 21st, Rocket Ride currently occupies the #27 slot on Billboard's Hard Music Chart.

The setting for the action-packed The Greatest Race is reported by Runke to be "every imaginable terrain on this godforsaken planet." It will feature a red, Ferrari F430 Spider(tm) convertible (commanded by Sammet) and K.I.T.T.© (driven by David Hasselhoff). This pairing seems strangely fated, as EDGUY first met Hasselhoff backstage following their 2004 Pro 7 television appearance in Germany.

Once the project is completed and the (obvious?) winner of "The Car Championship of the World" is announced, the short film will be showcased alongside other German Film School students' work, and possibly submitted to animation festivals.

"Of course I'm excited to lend my likeness to such a noble cause, although I don't know how much dialogue I'll have to say. What can I possibly need to say when I'll be driving 225 kph [140 mph]? I just hope this isn't the closest I get to that Ferrari!" chuckles Sammet.

A few words about the album from vocalist/guitarist John Haughm:

The album sounds distinctively like Agalloch but heavier and with elements of pure black metal, folky Scandinavian prog, and a touch of post rock. I was heavily influenced by recordings like Thule's "Natt" album while writing "Limbs" and "Fire Above, Ice Below" and you can definitely hear that sort of brooding darkness in those songs. "Not Unlike The Waves" is easily the heaviest thing we've ever recorded; yet at its foundation it is a neo-folk song. There's also some up-tempo material like "Falling Snow" and moments of total ambience as well. This is definitely not an album that can be judged by one or two songs. Everything flows together as a dynamic whole and the red thread of the lyrics holds the album together.

The lyrics this time unfold as an abstract and surreal folk tale. Although there is a framework of a concept, I wanted to create more of a dreamlike feeling with words than to merely "tell a story." My source of inspiration for the lyrics came from the surreal films of Alejandro Jodorowsky, Andrei Tarkovsky, and Sergei Parajanov as well as Northern Folklore and myths, Siberian Vodka, and the crumbling world around us all.

"Ashes Against The Grain" will be released in standard jewel case and digipack formats. The digipack will contain different artwork, courtesy of Tolonen from Nest. There is also a plan for a vinyl edition to be released a couple months after the CD.

El Power Metal Al Rescate

Ayer recibí "For The Sake Of Revenge", el nuevo álbum en vivo de Sonata Arctica que también incluye una versión del show en cuestión en DVD.

Y hoy me siento mucho mejor.

Nada como el power metal para levantarle el ánimo a uno después de una semana de decepciones personales (no entro en detalles para no aburrirlos) y una sobredosis doom (como para acompañar las penas, ¿vio?), sobre todo cuando las melodías y los estribillos los componen Tony Kakko y sus muchachos. Cosas como "Victoria's Secret", "Blinded No More", "Black Sheep" y "Misplaced" suenan espectaculares en vivo. La gente se corea todo, a Kakko se lo nota eufórico, y el sonido y la mezcla son de primera. La forma de encarar las estructuras de las canciones de estos finlandeses rechaza sin dudas los clichés, más aún dentro del monocorde mundo del power metal; y si bien este nuevo disco contiene demasiadas baladas para mi gusto, nadie puede refutar el hecho de que Sonata tiene lo suyo y merece ser considerada como una de las agrupaciones más sólidas y personales del estilo.

Y ustedes que a veces me escriben con amenazas de muerte porque, supuestamente, "odio al power metal"...

No el de Sonata Arctica, al menos.

Ya que estamos hablando de Amorphis, y mientras "Eclipse" suena de fondo (¿les dije que "Brother Moon" era un temazo?), aprovecho para compartir con ustedes algunas fotos que saqué durante un show que los finlandeses dieron acá en Florida varios meses atrás. De aburrido que estoy, nomás.

Tomi Joutsen no tuvo una muy buena noche aquella vez,
más que nada porque se lo notaba nervioso,
pero en "Eclipse" se adaptó perfectamente al grupo.

Y no se quejen, que ustedes vieron a The Gathering y ahora van a ver a Leaves´Eyes... Al menos déjen que me auto-engañe creyendo que la escena metalera de Florida existe... ("yeah, right...", como dicen acá). Aunque eso sí: El sabado veo a Lacuna Coil.

Las Muchas Formas De AMORPHIS

Retiro lo dicho un par de días atrás. El nuevo de Amorphis está realmente muy lindo.

Más que un regreso a los días de "Elegy", como tanto se había publicitado por ahí, "Eclipse" retoma el camino más conciso y pegadizo de "Tuonela", pero volviendo a invocar la fuerza y la solidez de antaño, incluidas unas breves irrupciones de los viejos y queridos gruñidos. Básicamente, éste es el disco que debería haber salido después de "Tuonela". La obra supera considerablemente a cosas como "Am Universum" o "Far From The Sun", y el nuevo cantante, Tomi Joutsen, no brilla ni desentona, sino que simplemente le queda justo al grupo, como si siempre hubiese formado parte de él. Su estilo, al fin y al cabo, es muy similar al de Pasi Koskinen. Pero sí, lo que escuchaste es cierto: volvió Amorphis, y se trajo consigo su vieja magia.

Tracks favoritos: "Leaves Scar", "Perkele (The God Of Fire)", "The Smoke" y sobre todo "Brother Moon".

Metal Muerto

El pasado 23 de Febrero, Deicide desató el Infierno sobre la Tierra en Buenos Aires... o algo así.

El show justo coincidió con mi estadía en Argentina, así que por supuesto aproveché para pegarme una vuelta por El Teatro, aunque a decir verdad mi intención era más que nada reencontrarme con amigos (viejos y nuevos) y colegas en lugar de comprobar bien de cerca cuán desgastada estaba la cruz invertida en la frente de Glen Benton. Y, para qué los voy a engañar, el death metal hoy en día raramente me mueve un pelo, en especial aquel que se limita al derrocheo descontralado de riffs y blast beats. Ya estoy viejo para tanto bochinche, pero sin embargo el black metal cada día me gusta más. Será que me quedo toda la vida con la melodía antes que el ritmo, más allá de la velocidad aplicada a cualquiera de los dos casos. Sobre gustos no hay nada escrito, dijo Esteban degustando a Ennio Morricone tras una sesión de black metal finlandés.

¿Y el show? Desganado, rutinario, predecible, de sonido pastoso (¿fue mi imaginación, o las bandas soportes sonaron mejor?)... Benton y los suyos sencillamente no tenían ganas de estar ahí. El que no lo haya notado probablemente haya asistido a tres shows en toda su vida. De hecho, aquel recordado show que los norteamericanos dieran junto a Cannibal Corpse y Ratos De Porao (¡y Escabios! ¿se acuerdan?) unos 10 años atrás, en el marco del "Roadrunner Festival", me había parecido considerablemente más sólido, si bien es cierto que Benton y sus Chicos Del Bajomundo raramente demuestran emoción alguna sobre las tablas. En esta oportunidad, no obstante, Deicide salió a cumplir y cobrar, y no mucho más. Tal vez la cosa haya repuntado hacia la mitad del show (ojalá haya sido así, y en ese caso retiraría gustoso todo lo antedicho), pero les voy a confesar una cosa:

me fui al quinto tema.

Se Viene Lo Nuevo De Maiden

No me gusta eso de andar "copiando y pegando" noticias de otros sitios, pero estas cosas hay que saberlas. Iron Maiden ya está en el estudio grabando el que será el sucesor de "Dance Of Death". Los detalles son cortesía de Blabbermouth.net:

Producer Kevin Shirley has posted the following update on the recording sessions for the new IRON MAIDEN album, tentatively due this fall:

"It's going REALLY great!!!! I've never been part of a more fun MAIDEN session — lots of laughing and we've cut eight tracks in the first week — and they're stunning! Heavy, and more proggy than recently — but also more GROOVE than I've heard in a long time! Super-strong material — and it sounds heavy as hell!!!! Awesome! And that's about as much as I can reveal."

IRON MAIDEN recently confirmed a full European leg of their world tour for this coming winter 2006. The trek will start in Scandinavia on November 9 and will include new album material which will be released prior to the tour. They are currently considering album artwork and the production for the tour, which of course will be in true MAIDEN tradition with spectacular stage production and massive sound and lights ... and, of course, Eddie!!

Says Steve Harris, "We've finished most of the writing of the album and have just started recording with Kevin Shirley so we're all very charged up at the moment to make a great record. Reaction to the tour so far has been brilliant and we're looking forward to putting a great show together for the fans and getting back out on the road towards the end of the year and playing new material live."

MAIDEN have invited the critically acclaimed American band TRIVIUM to be their special guests throughout the tour. TRIVIUM have enjoyed ever-increasing recognition these last few months and MAIDEN are sure that their fans will give them a great reception.

Mega-Therion

Sweden's THERION will be issuing a six-disc DVD/CD set, entitled "Celebrators of Becoming", on May 5. The package will include four DVDs and two audio discs. It will be available in two versions, one luxury digipak version in a slip case and one cheaper version, but both will contain all discs. The idea is that both should have a very reasonable price and be affordable for all fans. An overview of the set's contents is as follows:

Disc 1: Live in Mexico City 2004

Disc 2: THERION's own documentary from the last world tour (North and South America, Europe and Asia)

Disc 3: Various. all videoclips, TV performance, "The Golden Embrace", a show recorded at Wacken Open Air 2000 + more.

Disc 4: Historical disc, a collection of bootleg recordings of songs from 1989-2001 with comments from the band. You will follow the band on the long road from the demo days up til the big success of today. Some of the footage is super-rare.

(Each DVD disc has over two hours of material)

Disc 5 and 6 is the audio from the Mexico City show.

Back In The US... Y El Ataque De Los CD's Asesinos

Tres semanas de vacaciones en Argentina me vinieron más que bien. Lo primero es la familia, como bien dicen por ahí, y yo hacía exactamente un año que no veía a la mía. Nada como la comida casera de tu vieja, el abrazo de tu viejo, hermano, abuelos y tíos, la cotidianeidad de tus amigos, y el dormir en tu propia cama (uno podrá independizarse todo lo que quiera e incluso irse del país, pero la cama de “tu cuarto” sigue siendo TU cama).

No obstante, y esto me pasa siempre que vuelvo, hice de todo menos descansar. Entre mi recauchute físico anual (léase: visitar todo tipo de doctores y especialistas médicos para chequeos de rutina que acá me cobrarían dos ojos de la cara y tal vez hasta me hipotecarían un testículo), las visitas a familiares, los trámites inmigratorios, las reuniones con los chicos de la revista, y las obligatorias maratones nocturnas de DVD´s, lo que menos me sobró fue el tiempo. Y no me quejo para nada, ojo, porque para eso uno viaja de regreso, ¿no? Lástima que no pude haberme tomado una semanita extra para dedicarme a vacacionar de en serio y sin hacer absolutamente NADA. Ni tiempo para actualizar este blog tuve. Y no me pregunten por el número 13 de la revista. Bien, gracias. Por ahí andan varios reportajes esperando para ser desgrabados. Y la pila de discos para comentar comienza a encorvarse, amenazando con desmantelarse justo encima de mi cara. Y les juro que se sigue ensanchando delante de mis ojos en este preciso momento.

Ya de regreso en Florida, el maldito verano me persigue. En Buenos Aires el calor al menos es esperable en esta época, como la naturaleza manda, pero de acá me fui justo el único día en el que aparentemente hizo frío y ahora llego justo para cuando el invierno empieza a terminar y el termómetro marca los 28 todas las tardes. Piedad, por favor, que el aire acondicionado hace ruido y me tapa la nariz.

Y después, el horror. MAS discos esperándome en el buzón, que despotricaba por la sobredosis de calorías al que lo sometí en mi ausencia. Veamos:

No me quejo, faltaría más, pero créanme que eso de añorar tanto disco regalado se vuelve viejo más rápido de lo que ustedes pueden llegar a creer cuando los días sólo tienen 24 horas y las fechas de cierre no perdonan porque las pone uno mismo y, al fin y al cabo, hay que dar el ejemplo, ¿no?

Y además, vamos a ser honestos... De toda esa lista que acabo de mencionarles, lo poco que escuché no me dijo gran cosa. Ahí hay bandas ya consagradas y sin embargo cuanto más discos salen editados, menos cosas me convencen. Más calidad y menos cantidad, por favor, que así nadie da abasto y el gusto por este asunto se pierde más rápido que un blast beat.

¿Y eso? Me tocan el timbre.
