Una Noche Para El Recuerdo

supongo que mi cara de felicidad lo dice todo...

Si vieron el DVD (o escucharon el CD doble) en vivo titulado "A Night To Remember", ya sabrán que los suecos Evergrey son una aplanadora arriba de las tablas. Y ayer a la noche pude comprobarlo en carne propia. El grupo se presentó junto a In Flames y Throwdown en un pub llamado "Revolution" (capacidad máxima: 2000 personas), en la ciudad de Fort Lauderdale, acá en Florida. Era el último show de una extensa gira en la que también había participado Nevermore (banda que pareciera engancharse siempre en TODAS las giras), pero a último momento los norteamericanos se habían acoplado a OTRA gira más, en este caso por Europa, así que Evergrey se pudo despachar con un set-list más extenso de lo habitual.

Lo primero que llama la atención cuando uno escucha un álbum de Evergrey es la voz de Tom Englund. Portentosa sin llegar al extremo del grito, aterciopelada sin nunca insinuar atisbo de blandura, casi con un aire blusero, y siempre orquestando ese maravilloso arco-iris de grises erigido por el resto de la banda con inusual maestría. Básicamente, ningún cantante suena como él. Y en vivo me saqué cualquier únfima duda que podía llegar a tener. El mencionado DVD no estaba "arreglado", se los aseguro.

El show fue sólido y la lista de temas completita. Estuvieron joyitas como "As I Lie Here Bleeding", la hermosa "Recreation Day", "More Than Ever", "A Touch Of Blessing", "Blinded, "She Speaks To The Dead" y cosas nuevas como "Monday Morning Apocalypse" y "Unspeakable". El cierre, como ocurría en el DVD, fue con "The Masterplan". No hubo fisuras ni momentos flojos. 45 minutos aprovechados al máximo.

Después del show pude entrevistar a Rikard Zander (teclados) y Jonas Ekdhal (batería), y tuve la suerte de perderme lo de Throwdown (un pseudo-clon de Pantera y toda la porquería metalcore yanki), pero desde afuera se escuchaba claramente el ruido (y ninguna nuez) mientras charlaba con los suecos...

Lo de In Flames estuvo bien, pero verlo a Anders Friden vestido de colegial, con corbatita roja, bermudas anchas y medias a rayas, me revolvió un poco el estómago. ¿Hace falta parecerse a Jonathan Davis para penetrar en el mercado actual norteamericano? La respuesta ya la conocemos, claro, pero las similitudes se podría disimular un poco más...

In Flames 2006: nu-death-metal melódico

Anders Friden 2006: de algo hay que vivir...

Eso sí, la banda tiene más de una década de experiencia en vivo, y se nota. Sonaron ultra-compactos e incluso la semi-acústica "Come Clarity" adquirió nuevo brillo. Un lindo show que me recordó que estaba ante uno de los padres del "death metal melódico", me hizo sentir viejo al darme cuenta de que "The Jester Race" ya tiene más de 10 años y casi ni se parece a lo último que editó el quinteto, y me confirmó que el presente de la banda se disfruta mejor cuando uno es aún adolescente. Al menos esa noche los chicos de 15 eran los que más saltaban y las chicas las que más parecían disfrutar las tortuosas muecas y poses de Friden...

Próximo show: Kataklysm, Vader, Destruction y Graveworm...

¿El Disco Del Año?

Ayer recibí "Ashes Against The Grain", el nuevo CD de los norteamericanos Agalloch, e incluso en las primeras oídas ya se perfila como uno de los trabajos más memorables de un 2006 que, al menos hasta ahora, no pincha ni corta en materia musical. Si "The Mantle" te movió el piso, este tercer larga duración seguramente te va a emocionar de la misma forma. Las melodías siguen siendo oscuras, opresivas, apocalípticas, desoladoras... pero hermosísimas. Los tracks se suceden con fluidez digna de una banda en total control del medio, y las atmósferas te mantienen pegado a los parlantes, hipnotizado y deleitado, sin aburrirte ni por un segundo, a pesar de que varios temas rozan los 10 minutos, como siempre. Imposible definir el estilo de Agalloch, pero si algo es seguro es que el grupo no suena a nada que hayas escuchado antes y en cada una de sus tres obras logró adquirir personalidad y estética sonora propia. En "Ashes Against The Grain" continúan exactamente en esa misma línea, y si bien se podría decir que las sorpresas no son muchas, indudablemente nadie se va a quejar al respecto.

Sí, creo que ya tengo mi "Disco Del Año".

¡Santos Dragones! RHAPSODY & Christopher Lee En Vivo

Parace que la relación entre los italianos Rhapsody y el legendario actor Christopher Lee (Saruman en "El Señor De Los Anillos", Count Dooku en las dos últimas entregas de "Star Wars", y un larguísimo etcétera que incluye numerosos clásicos indiscutidos del cine de horror y fantasía) tiene para rato. Que los tanos más épicos y melodramáticos del power metal son también cinéfilos incurables no es ninguna novedad, pero el hecho de haber concretado la participación de Lee a modo de narrador en el álbum "Symphony Of Enchanted Lands, Part 2" no es poca cosa. Como buen descendiente de tanos, el hoy octagenario Lee es un ávido amante de la ópera (género en el cual incursionó brevemente), así que las melodías ultra-bombásticas y grandilocuentes de Turilli, Staropolli y cía. probablemente le hayan recordado sus viejas épocas de cantante, antes de que el séptimo arte ocupara gran parte de su vida hasta convertirlo en uno de los actores más productivos de la historia.

Lee y Rhapsody pueden verse en el clip de "The Magic Of The Wizard's Dream", y recientemente también realizaron varias participaciones especiales en vivo, incluyendo el festival Earthshaker en Alemania, donde además participó Manowar (Lee ofició también de narrador junto a los norteamericanos en los temas "Defender" -originalmente grabado por otra leyenda del cine: Orson Welles- y "Dark Avenger"). Lo Nuevo De BLIND GUARDIAN

BLIND GUARDIAN's upcoming CD is their first with drummer Frederik Ehmke, who replaced Thomen Stauch last year.

Eso sí: el single editado unas semanas atrás ("Fly") francamente no me entusiasmó demasiado. Todo pareciera indicar que los alemanes siguen firmes en su afán por dejar el machaque adrenalínico de lado y priorizar los arreglos complejos, tanto instrumentales como vocales. En otras palabras: si no te gustó "A Night At The Opera", es probable que este nuevo disco tampoco te vuelva muy loco. Para eso tenemos ahora a Savage Circus, la nueva banda del ex-batero de BG, Thomen Stauch. Aunque uno nunca sabe: en una de esas Hansi y sus muchachos nos sorprenden con algo a la altura de "Nightfall In Middle Earth". Ya lo dice el título del disco: se trata de "una vuelta de tuerca en el mito".

Le tengo fe, pero no mucha.

MAELSTROM #13 - Ya Casi...

Ahí arriba tienen la razón por la cual esta página estuvo tan calma en las últimas semanas. El número 13 de MAELSTROM ya está listo y debería entrar a imprenta en estos días. Quedó lindo y más que variado, como pueden comprabar leyendo la lista de contenidos. ¿Y no me digan que esa tapa no es una preciosura? Acaso la mejor hasta ahora, Cristina mediante. En una de esas el 13 es nuestro número de la suerte.

Ahora a descansar y retomar aquello que se conoce como "vida"... pero sólo por un par de días. El #14 ya está en marcha.

EDGUY, Una Ferrari F430 Y... David Hasselhoff???

Sí, la memoria no les falla.

STUDENT FILMMAKER CASTS DAVID HASSELHOFF AND EDGUY'S TOBIAS SAMMET IN MODERN VERSION OF BLAKE EDWARDS' 1965 CLASSIC, THE GREAT RACE

"All this time I thought America was the land of the miracle," muses EDGUY frontman Tobias Sammet from his home in Germany. "I'm glad this is a project where I won't have to actually fly to the Sahara Desert, do my own stunts with explosions, and take out a life insurance policy just to be involved!"

According to Sammet, the upcoming computer-animated project is fueled by a festering sibling rivalry between a 22-year old CGI student at The German Film School and his older brother. With the project, film student Thomas Runke hopes to settle a childhood score of which is the world's best car: a Ferrari(tm) or the Pontiac Trans Am(tm) known as K.I.T.T.©, made famous by David Hasselhoff and the mid-1980's television series Knight Rider.

According to the details provided by Runke to Sammet, it was a play session over 16 years ago that set the stage for this plot of digital revenge. Surrounded by friends and schoolmates, older brother Lucas challenged Runke to an impromptu race for "The Car Championship of the World," which involved both brothers carrying their toy cars (Runke carried the Ferrari(tm); Lucas carried K.I.T.T.©) over the rough terrain of their neighborhood playground toward a finish line that Lucas kept changing. Much like the Professor Fate character in The Great Race, the older brother was a skilled cheater and therefore won, but never acquiesed to a re-match.

It was Runke's best friend and avid EDGUY fan that recommended casting Tobias Sammet in the lead role after reading an online interview with the charismatic frontman where Sammet stated he wanted to sell enough of the band's latest release, Rocket Ride, to buy a Ferrari(tm). Released in North America on March 21st, Rocket Ride currently occupies the #27 slot on Billboard's Hard Music Chart.

The setting for the action-packed The Greatest Race is reported by Runke to be "every imaginable terrain on this godforsaken planet." It will feature a red, Ferrari F430 Spider(tm) convertible (commanded by Sammet) and K.I.T.T.© (driven by David Hasselhoff). This pairing seems strangely fated, as EDGUY first met Hasselhoff backstage following their 2004 Pro 7 television appearance in Germany.

Once the project is completed and the (obvious?) winner of "The Car Championship of the World" is announced, the short film will be showcased alongside other German Film School students' work, and possibly submitted to animation festivals.

"Of course I'm excited to lend my likeness to such a noble cause, although I don't know how much dialogue I'll have to say. What can I possibly need to say when I'll be driving 225 kph [140 mph]? I just hope this isn't the closest I get to that Ferrari!" chuckles Sammet.

A few words about the album from vocalist/guitarist John Haughm:

The album sounds distinctively like Agalloch but heavier and with elements of pure black metal, folky Scandinavian prog, and a touch of post rock. I was heavily influenced by recordings like Thule's "Natt" album while writing "Limbs" and "Fire Above, Ice Below" and you can definitely hear that sort of brooding darkness in those songs. "Not Unlike The Waves" is easily the heaviest thing we've ever recorded; yet at its foundation it is a neo-folk song. There's also some up-tempo material like "Falling Snow" and moments of total ambience as well. This is definitely not an album that can be judged by one or two songs. Everything flows together as a dynamic whole and the red thread of the lyrics holds the album together.

The lyrics this time unfold as an abstract and surreal folk tale. Although there is a framework of a concept, I wanted to create more of a dreamlike feeling with words than to merely "tell a story." My source of inspiration for the lyrics came from the surreal films of Alejandro Jodorowsky, Andrei Tarkovsky, and Sergei Parajanov as well as Northern Folklore and myths, Siberian Vodka, and the crumbling world around us all.

"Ashes Against The Grain" will be released in standard jewel case and digipack formats. The digipack will contain different artwork, courtesy of Tolonen from Nest. There is also a plan for a vinyl edition to be released a couple months after the CD.

El Power Metal Al Rescate

Ayer recibí "For The Sake Of Revenge", el nuevo álbum en vivo de Sonata Arctica que también incluye una versión del show en cuestión en DVD.

Y hoy me siento mucho mejor.

Nada como el power metal para levantarle el ánimo a uno después de una semana de decepciones personales (no entro en detalles para no aburrirlos) y una sobredosis doom (como para acompañar las penas, ¿vio?), sobre todo cuando las melodías y los estribillos los componen Tony Kakko y sus muchachos. Cosas como "Victoria's Secret", "Blinded No More", "Black Sheep" y "Misplaced" suenan espectaculares en vivo. La gente se corea todo, a Kakko se lo nota eufórico, y el sonido y la mezcla son de primera. La forma de encarar las estructuras de las canciones de estos finlandeses rechaza sin dudas los clichés, más aún dentro del monocorde mundo del power metal; y si bien este nuevo disco contiene demasiadas baladas para mi gusto, nadie puede refutar el hecho de que Sonata tiene lo suyo y merece ser considerada como una de las agrupaciones más sólidas y personales del estilo.

Y ustedes que a veces me escriben con amenazas de muerte porque, supuestamente, "odio al power metal"...

No el de Sonata Arctica, al menos.

Ya que estamos hablando de Amorphis, y mientras "Eclipse" suena de fondo (¿les dije que "Brother Moon" era un temazo?), aprovecho para compartir con ustedes algunas fotos que saqué durante un show que los finlandeses dieron acá en Florida varios meses atrás. De aburrido que estoy, nomás.

Tomi Joutsen no tuvo una muy buena noche aquella vez,
más que nada porque se lo notaba nervioso,
pero en "Eclipse" se adaptó perfectamente al grupo.
