The Gathering Re-Edita "Mandylion"

Todos tenemos discos que nos cambian la vida, y "Mandylion" sin dudas fue uno de los que cambió la mía, allá por 1995. De hecho, el debút frente al micrófono de la hermosa Anneke van Giersbergen en la banda holandesa también cambió de forma considerable el rumbo de la música pesada. La ola de cantantes femeninas que inundaron al género tienen su punto de partida en este disco. Hoy no nos sorprendemos al escuchar a una mujer al frente de una agrupación, incluso una que vocifera furiosamente, como bien lo demuestra la infartante Angela Gossow que, al igual que Anneke, le cambió el rumbo -y la fortuna- a Arch Enemy. Y sin Aneke probablemente tampoco hubiésemos tenido a una Cristina Scabbia. ¿Se imaginan lo aburrida que sería la vida sin bajarse fotos de la Scabbia de Internet? Gracias, Anneke, por cambiarle la cara (literalmente) a la música pesada...

Acabo de enterarme que para celebrar el décimo aniversario de la salida del disco, The Gathering va a re-editar al memorable "Mandylion" en una versión bastante especial. Fíjense:

Century Media will celebrate the 10th anniversary of THE GATHERING's "Mandylion" album by releasing a special deluxe edition of the CD on November 21. The double CD set features new artwork, a 16-page booklet with song-by-song liner notes from the band and never-before-seen photos from the album's recording sessions. CD2 contains the first demo recordings THE GATHERING did with vocalist Anneke van Giersbergen in June 1994 and early 1995. "Solar Glider" is a previously unreleased instrumental while "Third Chance" appeared two years later in a different version on the "Nighttime Birds" album.

"Working with THE GATHERING on this album is one of my most beautiful memories. To record with such an open-minded band like them... they'd need three sounds when other bands needed 100, and those three sounds were enough to create a gorgeous atmosphere," stated "Mandylion" co-producer Siggi Bemm.

Sí, Century Media sigue robando (recordemos que el grupo no se separó del sello en buenos términos y básicamente no tiene voz ni voto frente a la re-edición de su catálogo), y esta nueva edición se anuncia tan sólo a las pocas semanas del compilado de rarezas y demos, "Accesories" (que en Argentina edita Icarus). Pero los giles somos nosotros, que al final terminamos por comprar todo lo que esta gente saca... Y muy gustosos, claro.
